The rose hip fruit fly (scientific name: Rhagoletis alternata) is a damaging insect belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is a well-known pest that specifically targets various species of the Rosa genus, significantly impacting the quality and quantity of harvested rose hips.

The host range is primarily limited to rose hips. Because the larvae develop inside the fruit, the damage is often hidden until the fruit begins to show signs of decay or deformation, making early detection difficult for both commercial growers and garden owners.

Regarding its biology, the insect typically completes one generation per year. Adult flies emerge during the summer months, coinciding with the development of the rose hips. After mating, females insert their eggs into the developing fruit. The larvae then feed on the interior tissues, causing the fruit to rot prematurely before they drop to the ground to pupate in the soil.

The economic impact of Rhagoletis alternata is significant. Infested fruits undergo rapid decay, lose their nutritional value, and become unusable for pharmacological or food processing purposes. High infestation levels can result in almost total loss of the yield in unsprayed plantings.

Effective management and control measures for the rose hip fruit fly include:

• Strict sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infested hips before larvae exit to pupate.
• Soil cultivation around host plants in late autumn to expose overwintering pupae to predators and adverse weather conditions.
• Monitoring pest populations using yellow sticky traps or pheromone lures to time pesticide applications precisely.
• Applying insecticide treatments during the peak flight period of adult flies, strictly following safety intervals for harvesting.
