The rose hip fruit fly (scientific name: Rhagoletis alternata) is a damaging insect belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. The host range is primarily limited to rose hips. Because the larvae develop inside the fruit, the damage is often hidden until the fruit begins to show signs of decay or deformation, making early detection difficult for both commercial growers and garden owners.
