Description
The Rose hip fruit fly (Rhagoletis basiola) is a member of the Tephritidae family within the order Diptera. This pest specifically targets plants of the Rosa genus, posing a major threat to rose hip production by damaging the fruit directly and reducing both yield and quality.
The life cycle of Rhagoletis basiola involves a single generation per year. The insect overwinters as a puparium in the soil beneath the host plants. In early summer, adult flies emerge, and females begin laying eggs by piercing the surface of the developing rose hips with their ovipositors.
Once the eggs hatch, the larvae start feeding on the interior of the rose hip, specifically targeting the pulp and the seeds. This internal damage interrupts the normal development of the fruit, causing premature ripening, shriveling, and often decay before the harvest period even begins.
