Description

Systematic position of the pest belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. Rhagoletis cingulata is a significant agricultural pest that primarily targets stone fruits, representing a major challenge for commercial fruit production in affected regions.

Host plants are mainly represented by sweet and sour cherries (Prunus avium and Prunus cerasus). Occasionally, the fly can infest other stone fruits such as peaches, plums, and wild cherry species, which can act as reservoirs for the pest when primary hosts are unavailable.

Biology and life cycle are univoltine, meaning there is typically one generation per year. The insect overwinters as a puparium in the soil. Adults emerge in late spring or early summer, depending on soil temperature. Mating occurs shortly after emergence, and females lay their eggs directly into the fruit skin.

Nature of damage and economic impact are severe. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the fruit, feeding on the pulp near the pit. This feeding causes the fruit to soften, rot, and frequently drop prematurely. High infestation rates result in complete loss of marketability and crop yields.

Control measures require an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

  • Deploying yellow sticky traps to monitor adult flight activity and density.
  • Applying insecticide sprays at specific developmental stages to prevent egg-laying.
  • Removing and destroying infested fallen fruit to stop larvae from pupating in the soil.
  • Cultivating soil in the fall to expose overwintering pupae to predators and environmental extremes.
