Description

The Northern cherry fruit fly (Rhagoletis fausta) is a member of the Tephritidae family, belonging to the order Diptera. This species is a significant pest of stone fruits, known primarily for its impact on cherry production in North America, where it poses a recurring threat to commercial orchards.

This pest exclusively targets stone fruits, particularly cherries (both sweet and tart varieties). Its presence is often overlooked until the harvest stage, as the infestation occurs inside the fruit, making it difficult to detect during the early phases of larval development.

The insect typically produces one generation per year. The overwintering pupae reside in the soil beneath the host trees. Adults emerge in late spring or early summer, corresponding with the ripening process of the fruit. After mating, females insert their eggs just beneath the epidermis of the cherry skin.

The damage caused by Rhagoletis fausta is significant. Upon hatching, larvae burrow into the fruit, feeding on the pulp around the pit. This causes the fruit to soften, change color prematurely, and rot. Infested cherries are generally unmarketable and often drop from the tree before they can be harvested.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential for control. These include sanitation measures such as removing and destroying all infested dropped fruit, and tilling the soil under the tree canopy to expose pupae to predators. Monitoring with yellow sticky cards is critical to time chemical treatments correctly, ensuring that sprays are applied before the female lays eggs.
