Walnut husk fly

The Walnut husk fly (Rhagoletis juglandis) is a destructive dipteran insect belonging to the Tephritidae family. It is a major pest for walnut growers, known for its ability to ruin the quality of nuts by feeding on the outer husks. Native to North America, this species has become a significant economic concern for both commercial orchards and backyard walnut trees.

This pest specifically targets members of the Juglans genus. The walnut husk fly exhibits a preference for thinner-skinned varieties, which are easier for the females to penetrate when depositing their eggs. Infestations can lead to a total loss of commercial value for the affected nut crop if left unmanaged.

The life cycle of Rhagoletis juglandis is primarily univoltine, meaning it produces one generation per year. The insect overwinters as a pupa in the soil beneath the host tree. Adult flies emerge during the summer months, mate, and begin laying eggs in the walnut husks. After hatching, the larvae tunnel through the green flesh of the husk, destroying the tissue before dropping to the ground to pupate in the soil.

The primary damage occurs on the husk, which turns black and slimy as the larvae feed. The staining compounds released during this decay often penetrate the shell, causing the inner kernel to discolor, shrivel, or become moldy. Even if the kernel remains edible, the damaged shell makes the nut commercially unattractive and often leads to premature nut drop.

Management of the walnut husk fly requires a multi-faceted approach:

• Strict sanitation by removing and destroying all infested, fallen nuts immediately.
• Cultivating the soil beneath the canopy to expose and kill overwintering pupae.
• Deploying yellow sticky traps or ammonium carbonate lures for monitoring and trapping adults.
• Applying insecticides targeting the adult fly before oviposition occurs.
• Utilizing biological control agents or specific baits that attract the flies to insecticide spots.
