Description
Taxonomic position. The Barberry fruit fly (Rhagoletis meigenii) belongs to the order Diptera, family Tephritidae. This species is a specialized pest whose biological cycle is strictly dependent on plants of the genus Berberis.
Host plants and damage symptoms. This pest primarily infests the berries of the common barberry and other related species. The female lays eggs under the skin of the developing fruit. The larva develops inside, feeding on the pulp, which causes the berries to lose their quality, drop prematurely, and become unsuitable for consumption or processing.
Biology and life cycle. The pest overwinters as a puparium in the upper soil layer beneath the shrubs. The emergence of adults typically coincides with the flowering period or the formation of barberry fruit sets. After mating, females begin laying eggs. The larval stage is completed inside a single berry, after which the larva drops to the ground to pupate in the soil.
Economic impact. The level of damage can be extremely severe, with infestations affecting up to 80-100% of the harvest in peak years. Infested fruit decays rapidly, which not only decreases yields but also weakens the overall vitality of the shrub due to premature fruit drop.
Control measures. Management strategies include both agrotechnical and chemical approaches. Deep cultivation of the soil under the bushes during the pupation period is essential to destroy the overwintering puparia. During the adult flight period, systemic or contact insecticides can be used, provided that pre-harvest intervals are strictly followed. Prompt collection and destruction of fallen fruit are also crucial for reducing the population for the following season.
