Description
The apple maggot (Rhagoletis pomonella) is a member of the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae (fruit flies). Originally a North American species, it has become a significant economic pest for fruit growers globally, known for its destructive impact on pome fruit production.
The primary hosts of this pest are species of Malus (apple) and Crataegus (hawthorn). However, the larvae can also develop in other fruits such as pears, apricots, and plums, especially when preferred host fruits are scarce or under specific ecological conditions.
The life cycle begins when adult flies emerge from the soil in mid-summer. Following mating, females deposit eggs beneath the skin of developing fruit using their ovipositor. The larvae hatch and tunnel throughout the flesh, eventually exiting the fruit to pupate in the soil, where they overwinter as puparia.
Damage is caused by the larval stage, which creates unsightly, winding trails through the fruit flesh, often referred to as "railroading." As the larvae feed, the interior of the apple becomes brown and spongy, leading to fruit drop and making the produce unsuitable for fresh market sale or storage.
