Description

Systematic position and background. The gooseberry fruit fly (Rhagoletis ribicola) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is a specialized pest primarily found in North America. This insect is a significant concern for small fruit producers as its larvae feed directly inside the berries, causing substantial economic damage.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this pest are members of the Ribes genus. This includes gooseberries, as well as red, white, and black currants. The fly is highly adapted to these species, making commercial berry production difficult in areas where the pest is established.

Biology and life cycle. This species completes one generation per year. The insect overwinters as pupae in the soil beneath the host plants. Adult flies emerge during the period when berries are beginning to form. Females lay eggs individually just beneath the skin of the fruit.
