Description

Systematic position: The tomato fruit fly (Rhagoletis tomatis) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. This pest is a highly specialized species that poses a significant economic threat to solanaceous plants, primarily tomatoes, within its distribution range.

Host plants and damage: The species primarily infests tomato fruits. Adult females deposit eggs under the skin of the developing fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the pulp, feeding on the internal tissues. This feeding activity causes premature fruit ripening, softening, and eventually complete decay due to secondary infections.
