Description

Rhammatocerus pictus is a species of grasshopper belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. This insect is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in parts of South America, where it periodically forms large swarms that can devastate vast areas of grassland and cultivated crops.

The pest primarily targets graminaceous plants, with a strong preference for crops such as maize, sugarcane, and sorghum. It also thrives on various wild grasses found on pastures, making it a critical threat to both commercial agriculture and livestock fodder production in infested regions.

The biology of Rhammatocerus pictus is highly adapted to seasonal climate cycles. The life cycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in the soil, often in clusters known as pods, which are capable of surviving harsh dry conditions. Upon the arrival of seasonal rains, the eggs hatch into nymphs, which undergo multiple molts before reaching the winged adult stage.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by voracious leaf tissue consumption. Both nymphs and adults scrape or consume leaves, stems, and reproductive structures. High populations can cause complete defoliation, leading to stunted plant growth, reduced photosynthetic capability, and, in severe cases, the complete destruction of the crop stand.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential for control:

  • Regular field monitoring to detect early-instar nymph populations;
  • Application of selective insecticides when economic thresholds are exceeded;
  • Mechanical soil disturbance to destroy egg pods located in the substrate;
  • Utilization of biological control agents, including entomopathogenic fungi, to suppress population spikes.
