Description
The genus Rhinostomus belongs to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are significant pests of palm species, posing a severe threat to both agricultural plantations and ornamental gardens in tropical and subtropical regions. Their ability to colonize the interior of the plant makes them particularly difficult to detect.
The host range includes a variety of palm species, such as coconut palms, oil palms, and several ornamental types. The damage caused by these insects can be catastrophic, leading to widespread plant death if left unmanaged, which significantly impacts the productivity of palm-based industries.
The biology of Rhinostomus follows a complete metamorphic cycle including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females use their elongated rostrum to create holes in the plant tissue, depositing eggs inside. The larvae then tunnel into the trunk or petioles, feeding on the internal tissues, which progressively destroys the structural integrity of the tree.
Damage symptoms often start with leaf wilting and crown drooping, indicating severe internal tunneling. In many cases, the plant may collapse due to structural weakening. Additionally, the feeding activity promotes secondary infections by fungi and bacteria, which rapidly accelerate the decline of the infested palm.
