Palm weevil

Rhinostomus barbirostris

Description

Systematic position. Rhinostomus barbirostris is a species of beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a significant pest of various palm species in the tropical Americas, characterized by its specialized adaptation to boring into plant stems.

Host crops. The pest primarily targets members of the Arecaceae family. Coconut palms (Cocos nucifera) and oil palms are the most susceptible commercial hosts. Furthermore, various ornamental palm trees found in parks and landscape gardens are also subject to severe infestation by this beetle.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves internal development within the palm tissue. The female adult selects suitable spots on the palm trunk or petiole to deposit eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the plant, feeding on the nutrient-rich pith, which allows them to grow rapidly while remaining protected from external environmental factors.

Damage and pest significance. The damage inflicted by Rhinostomus barbirostris larvae is extensive. By creating galleries in the internal structures, they destroy the plant's vascular system. Visible signs include chlorosis of leaves, wilting, and structural failure of the stem. Severe infestations invariably result in the death of the apical meristem, leading to tree mortality.

Control measures. Managing this pest requires a multifaceted approach due to its endophytic lifestyle:

  • Regular field inspections to identify early symptoms of tunneling and frass presence.
  • Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of heavily infested palm trees.
  • Injection of systemic insecticides directly into the palm trunk to eliminate internal larvae.
  • Deployment of pheromone-based trapping systems to monitor and reduce adult population density.
