Rhizostoma is a genus of large jellyfish belonging to the order Rhizostomeae and the family Rhizostomatidae. Within the context of agricultural and industrial management, these organisms are categorized as biological hazards for facilities utilizing coastal water for irrigation, cooling systems, or aquaculture operations. They are not plant pests in the traditional sense, but their impact on agricultural infrastructure is profound.

The life cycle of Rhizostoma alternates between a benthic polyp stage and a pelagic medusa stage. During the warm season, environmental conditions often trigger rapid population growth, resulting in dense swarms. These massive aggregations of jellyfish move with currents, frequently entering bays and estuaries where agricultural water intake points are located.

The primary agricultural damage caused by Rhizostoma is the clogging of irrigation water intakes. When swarms are pulled into pump stations, their soft but large bodies obstruct screens and filters. This blockage causes pump failure, flow reduction, and potential mechanical breakdown of irrigation equipment, which can lead to water stress in crops during critical growth phases.

In aquaculture, Rhizostoma poses a threat by competing for food resources and causing physical harm to fish stocks. The stings from these jellyfish can irritate the gills of fish, leading to stress, secondary infections, and reduced growth rates. Furthermore, high concentrations of jellyfish biomass can deplete dissolved oxygen levels in confined water areas, impacting the health of farmed aquatic species.
