Description
Rhopalomyia is a genus of gall midges belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae and the order Diptera. These small flies are well-known in entomology and agronomy for their unique ability to induce the formation of galls, or abnormal tissue growths, on their host plants.
These insects primarily target plants within the Asteraceae family. A notable agricultural example is the chrysanthemum gall midge, which can cause significant damage to commercial flower production, greenhouse stocks, and wild plant populations like sagebrush.
The lifecycle of Rhopalomyia is intrinsically linked to the host plant's development. Adult females lay eggs on developing buds or leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae trigger the plant to produce a gall. This structure provides a stable microenvironment and nourishment, protecting the larvae from environmental stressors and natural predators throughout their development.
