The peach aphid (Rhopalosiphum dianthi) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Aphididae family. It is recognized as a major global pest, significantly impacting agricultural productivity due to its high reproductive rate and extreme polyphagy, allowing it to thrive in diverse environments.
This pest infests a vast range of plant species, including stone fruits like peaches, as well as essential vegetable crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. In greenhouses, it creates a constant threat by colonizing ornamental plants and vegetable seedlings, often leading to total crop failure if left unchecked.
The life cycle of this species is complex and highly adaptive. While it typically survives the winter as eggs on the bark of host trees, in warmer climates or greenhouse conditions, it can persist through continuous parthenogenetic reproduction. This ability allows for the rapid development of large populations in a short timeframe, complicating early detection.
Feeding damage occurs as the aphids pierce plant tissues and suck the sap. This leads to severe leaf curling, stunting of growth, and the development of sooty mold due to the secretion of honeydew. More importantly, this aphid serves as a highly efficient vector for numerous plant viruses, which often cause more economic damage than the physical feeding itself.

Cultural practices, such as maintaining field sanitation and controlling host weeds, are vital. Chemical controls should rely on rotating insecticides with different modes of action to prevent the development of resistance, supplemented by biological control agents like ladybird beetles or lacewings.
