Water lily aphid

The water lily aphid (Rhopalosiphum nymphaeae) is a significant pest belonging to the family Aphididae. Known for its distinct migratory behavior, it shifts between aquatic plants and various terrestrial trees, posing a threat to both ornamental ponds and commercial orchards.

This pest primarily infests aquatic plants such as water lilies (Nymphaea), yellow water-lilies, and pondweeds. During different phases of its life cycle, it also colonizes members of the Prunus genus, including plum, peach, and apricot trees, which serve as primary hosts during the overwintering period.

The life cycle involves an alternation of hosts. Eggs overwinter on the bark of stone fruit trees. In spring, wingless stem mothers emerge, producing subsequent generations that eventually develop wings. These winged forms migrate to aquatic environments during the summer months to breed, later returning to their primary hosts in autumn.

Damage is caused by the aphid sucking plant sap, which leads to leaf curling, stunted growth, and general chlorosis. The accumulation of honeydew secreted by the aphids often promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and impairs photosynthesis, severely weakening the infested host plants.

• Regular inspection of aquatic plants and surrounding fruit trees.
• Physical removal of aphids using a strong spray of water from a hose.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested leaves or shoots.
• Applying insecticidal soaps or horticultural oils where safe for the ecosystem.

Effective management requires vigilance, especially during the spring migration period. Integrated pest management (IPM) practices, including the preservation of natural predators like ladybirds and lacewings, are highly recommended to keep aphid populations in check without resorting to harsh chemical treatments that could harm aquatic life.
