Description
Systematic position. Rhopalus sapporensis belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Rhopalidae. These true bugs are recognized as significant phytophagous pests capable of impacting the growth and development of various host plants within temperate agricultural environments.
Affected crops. This species primarily infests cereal crops. It poses a threat to wheat, barley, rye, and oat fields. Additionally, the pest utilizes various wild grasses as alternative hosts, which allows the population to survive and reproduce even when primary commercial crops are not available.
Biology and life cycle. Rhopalus sapporensis undergoes hemimetabolous development. The adults hibernate in crop debris or soil surface layers. In the spring, they emerge to feed on developing green tissues and begin the reproductive cycle. The nymphal stages pass through five instars before reaching the adult phase, consistently feeding on plant sap throughout their growth.
Damage and harmfulness. The economic damage is caused by both adults and nymphs piercing plant tissues with their stylets to extract cell sap. This activity leads to tissue necrosis, wilting, and stunted plant growth. Heavy infestations during the vegetative stage often result in reduced yield and lower grain quality, which can cause substantial financial losses for farmers.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this bug. Key practices include the destruction of crop residues after harvest to eliminate overwintering sites, as well as the removal of weeds from field margins. In instances where population levels exceed the economic threshold, systemic insecticides should be applied to protect the crop during critical growth stages.
