Description
Systematic position: The red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) is a member of the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae. It is recognized globally as a primary pest of various palm species, causing massive economic losses in both agricultural and ornamental sectors due to its highly destructive feeding habits.
Host plants: This pest infests a wide range of palm species, including the date palm, coconut palm, oil palm, and Canary Island date palm. Its ability to thrive in diverse environments allows it to spread rapidly across different regions, significantly impacting both local ecosystems and commercial palm production.
Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult weevil is a strong flyer, capable of traveling long distances to locate suitable host trees. The female lays eggs within damaged tissue or the soft parts of the palm stem, where larvae later emerge to begin their internal feeding cycle.
Damage and harmfulness: The larval stage is the most destructive phase of the life cycle. The larvae feed extensively within the palm stem, creating complex tunnels that disrupt vascular function and structural integrity. Often, the tree shows no clear external symptoms until the infestation is severe, at which point the palm crown collapses, making it impossible to save the plant.
