Description

Rhynchophorus bilineatus is a member of the Coleoptera order and Curculionidae family. As a specialized phytophagous insect, this weevil is a significant pest of palm species throughout its native range in Southeast Asia and Oceania, where it severely impacts agricultural output.

The primary hosts of this pest include coconut palms (Cocos nucifera) and sago palms (Metroxylon sagu). By attacking the internal tissues of the host, the larvae disrupt the plant's structural integrity and nutrient transport, which can lead to the total collapse and death of mature, commercially valuable trees.

The life cycle encompasses four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female weevil inserts eggs into tissue crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the trunk, where they feed intensively. This protected environment makes the pest exceptionally difficult to reach with standard surface-applied chemical treatments.

Visual symptoms of infestation include wilting and yellowing of the fronds, as well as distinct holes in the trunk accompanied by frass accumulation. The economic impact is profound, as the infested palms often require removal and destruction to prevent the spread of the weevil to adjacent healthy trees within the plantation.
