Description
Systematic position: The red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is considered a major economic pest worldwide, known for its ability to devastate palm populations in both urban landscapes and industrial plantations.
Affected crops: The primary hosts for this weevil are various species of palms, including Phoenix dactylifera and Phoenix canariensis. While it prefers palms, it can also infest other monocotyledonous crops such as sugarcane, agave, and banana, making it a highly versatile and dangerous threat.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of the red palm weevil consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The entire life cycle usually occurs within the host plant. Females lay hundreds of eggs in wounds or cracks on the surface of the palm trunk. Larvae, which are the main destructive stage, tunnel deeply into the soft tissues of the palm, where they pupate inside a cocoon made of plant fibers.
Damage and economic impact: The damage is largely caused by the larvae feeding inside the trunk, which often leads to the destruction of the apical meristem or internal structural integrity. Typical signs include the oozing of brown liquid, the presence of frass at the base of leaves, and the eventual collapse of the crown. By the time symptoms are visible from the outside, the palm is often beyond rescue.
