Description

Systematic position: Rhynchophorus pascha belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a highly specialized wood-boring insect that causes significant economic loss to agricultural and ornamental palm species across its distribution range.

Host crops: The primary hosts are members of the Arecaceae family, particularly oil palms, date palms, and various ornamental palm varieties. The insect prefers succulent tissues where it can feed and safely undergo its development stages without being easily detected by external observers.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female lays eggs in crevices of the host plant. Larvae are the most destructive stage; they tunnel through the soft internal tissues of the stem or the crown. Once mature, the larva creates a fibrous cocoon to pupate, eventually emerging as an adult beetle.

Damage and impact: Damage is internal and often remains hidden until the palm tree is severely compromised. Symptoms include yellowing of the fronds, wilting of the spear leaf, and the collapse of the central crown. Internal feeding by larvae causes large cavities, leading to secondary bacterial or fungal infections that accelerate the death of the tree.

Protection measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Management strategies include the deployment of pheromone traps to monitor and reduce adult population density, as well as the application of systemic insecticides injected into the palm trunk. Sanitation, involving the prompt removal and destruction of infested palms, is critical to prevent the spread of the population to neighboring healthy trees.
