Description

Systematic position. This pest belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. Known scientifically as Rhynchophorus quadrangulus, it represents a significant taxonomic group of specialized snout beetles that exhibit high levels of adaptation to specific host plants within the palm family.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this species include coconut palms and oil palms. The insect is particularly devastating in plantation environments where high densities of host trees facilitate the rapid spread of the population and the potential for large-scale economic losses.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle encompasses four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult females drill holes in the plant tissue to deposit eggs. The larval stage is the most destructive, as larvae burrow deep into the soft tissues of the palm's terminal bud or stem, where they feed protected from environmental threats and many predators.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The feeding behavior of larvae destroys the internal vascular tissues of the tree. This damage prevents nutrient uptake, leading to the yellowing of fronds, wilting, and eventually the structural collapse of the palm. Because the larvae remain hidden inside the trunk, damage is often detected only when the tree is already severely compromised.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Management strategies involve regular field monitoring using pheromone traps to capture adults, strict sanitation procedures that involve the prompt removal and destruction of infested palms, and the application of chemical insecticides. In advanced management systems, systemic pesticides are injected into the tree trunk to reach the larvae within the stem.
