Ribautiana

Ribautiana is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae (leafhoppers). These small, jumping insects are common pests in orchards, gardens, and urban green spaces, where they primarily feed on the foliage of deciduous trees and shrubs, causing significant stress to the host plants.

The host range of Ribautiana includes various plants from the Rosaceae family. They are particularly destructive to apple, pear, and plum trees. Additionally, the pest can be found on rowan, hawthorn, and certain species of maple, where it colonizes the underside of leaves to pierce the tissue and extract plant sap.

The life cycle of Ribautiana is synchronized with the developmental stages of its host trees. The species typically overwinters in the egg stage, with females laying eggs beneath the bark of young shoots. In spring, nymphs emerge and undergo several developmental stages while feeding actively throughout the summer. The pest can produce multiple generations per season, making population management challenging.

Damage symptoms manifest as leaf discoloration. Feeding activity creates numerous tiny white or yellowish spots on the leaf surface, leading to a stippled or mottled appearance. During heavy infestations, premature yellowing and leaf drop occur, which disrupt photosynthesis, decrease the tree's overall hardiness, and reduce fruit quality and yield.

Protecting plants from Ribautiana requires an integrated pest management approach. In commercial orchards, the application of systemic or contact insecticides targeting early-stage nymphs is highly effective. Complementary cultural practices include the removal of leaf litter where overwintering stages might reside and proper dormant pruning of affected shoots.
