Description

The elm leafhopper (Ribautiana ulmi) is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. As a specialized pest, it primarily targets various species of elm trees, although it can also be observed feeding on linden, maple, and other deciduous trees in urban and natural landscapes.

The life cycle of Ribautiana ulmi typically involves one or two generations per year. The insects overwinter in the egg stage, inserted into the bark or leaf petioles of the host plant. Once temperatures rise in spring, nymphs emerge and begin feeding on the underside of the leaves, progressing through several instars before reaching the adult stage.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by stippling, where feeding creates small, white or yellowish spots on the upper leaf surface. This loss of chlorophyll leads to a mottled appearance, often referred to as leaf blanching. In severe infestations, the entire canopy may turn chlorotic, resulting in premature defoliation and diminished plant vigor.

Beyond the direct physical damage to the leaves, the elm leafhopper acts as a stress factor for the tree. By removing essential nutrients and fluids, the infestation weakens the tree's immune system, making it more susceptible to environmental stressors, such as drought or secondary fungal infections, which further compromise the tree's health.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

  • Monitoring foliage for early signs of stippling starting in late spring.
  • Applying insecticidal treatments when nymph populations are at their peak.
  • Encouraging natural predators such as lacewings, ladybugs, and parasitic wasps.
  • Ensuring proper irrigation and soil nutrition to help trees recover from feeding damage.
