Rivellia is a genus of flies belonging to the family Platystomatidae. These insects are recognized as significant pests in agriculture, specifically impacting legume crops, where their larval stages can cause substantial economic losses if not properly managed.

The primary crop damaged by this pest is soybean. The larvae of Rivellia are specialized feeders that target the root system of the plant. They specifically attack the nitrogen-fixing nodules, which is a critical developmental stage for soybeans, thereby depriving the plant of essential nitrogen nutrition.

The biological cycle of Rivellia involves an egg stage deposited near the root zone, followed by larval development in the soil. The larvae migrate to the roots to feed. The pupation occurs within the soil, where the insect often overwinters as a puparium, making the population resilient to various seasonal fluctuations.

The severity of damage caused by Rivellia is characterized by stunted plant growth, leaf chlorosis, and general physiological weakness.
