Description
Rivellia apicalis, commonly recognized as the soybean root maggot, is a member of the Diptera order and the Platystomatidae family. It has emerged as a significant threat to legume production, specifically targeting crops with substantial root systems during their early growth stages.
Soybean is the primary host for this pest. The larvae specifically inhabit the soil environment surrounding the plant roots. Because the damage occurs underground, growers often do not notice the infestation until the plants begin to show symptoms of severe stress, including stunted growth and poor nutrient uptake.
The life cycle of the insect consists of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Adult flies oviposit in the soil near the plant base. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately migrate to the root zone, where they feed on the exterior and interior tissues. This feeding behavior disrupts the vascular system of the soybean plant, preventing proper hydration.
The economic impact of Rivellia apicalis is substantial due to the reduction in total yield and plant population density. Affected plants often exhibit chlorosis (yellowing) of the leaves and may die if the root system is completely compromised. The vulnerability of the plant is highest during the early vegetative stages.
