Soybean nodule fly

The soybean nodule fly (Rivellia quadrifasciata) is a dipteran insect belonging to the family Platystomatidae. This pest has gained prominence in soybean-producing regions due to its specific and damaging impact on the nitrogen-fixing capabilities of legumes, causing significant economic losses in infested fields.

The primary crop damaged by this species is soybean. While adult flies are frequently observed resting on foliage or feeding on aphid honeydew, the primary damage occurs below ground during the larval stage. This subterranean behavior makes early detection of an infestation challenging for farmers and consultants.

Regarding the biological cycle, adult females deposit eggs in the soil near the base of soybean plants. Upon hatching, the larvae move to the root zone, where they feed on the nitrogen-fixing nodules. This feeding behavior disrupts the symbiotic relationship between the plant and Bradyrhizobium bacteria, directly impacting plant nitrogen uptake.

The impact of this pest is characterized by stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and reduced yield potential. Furthermore, the larval feeding sites act as entry points for soil-borne pathogens, such as Fusarium or Rhizoctonia, which exacerbate the damage by inducing secondary root and stem rots that can lead to stand loss.

To manage and control Rivellia quadrifasciata, agronomists recommend the following integrated pest management (IPM) practices:

• Utilizing seed-applied insecticides to protect the root zone during early seedling development.
• Implementing strict crop rotation schedules to break the pest's reproductive cycle.
• Monitoring adult populations using sticky traps placed at field margins.
