Rousette fruit bats

Rousette fruit bats, belonging to the genus Rousettus, are large frugivorous bats from the Pteropodidae family. Unlike insectivorous bats, these mammals are specialized fruit eaters, posing a significant challenge to farmers in tropical and subtropical regions who cultivate fruit-bearing trees.

Taxonomically, they are members of the order Chiroptera. A unique biological feature of this genus is their use of tongue-clicking echolocation, which differentiates them from most other fruit bats. This ability enables them to navigate effectively in complete darkness, making them highly successful at exploiting fruit orchards during the night.

These animals target a wide range of agricultural crops, including mangoes, bananas, guavas, dates, citrus fruits, and figs. During the peak harvest season, a large colony can cause devastating economic damage by consuming or mangling a high percentage of the yield before it reaches maturity, rendering the produce unmarketable.

The biology of Rousette fruit bats involves communal roosting in caves or dense foliage, from which they forage across large territories. Their high mobility allows them to track seasonal fruiting patterns over vast distances. While their reproductive rate is relatively slow, their high degree of social organization ensures that they return consistently to productive feeding sites.

Damage is characterized by bite marks, half-eaten fruit left on trees, and extensive contamination from fecal matter. These physical injuries create entry points for secondary fungal and bacterial infections, leading to rapid decay of remaining healthy fruits. Furthermore, the presence of these bats can lead to the spread of zoonotic pathogens, which requires careful management practices.
