Cacao mirid

Sahlbergella singularis is a destructive insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. Known commonly as the cacao mirid, this pest is a primary economic threat to cocoa production in West and Central Africa, where it causes significant damage to both saplings and mature trees.

The host range of Sahlbergella singularis is primarily focused on the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao). However, it is also known to infest other plant species within the Malvaceae family, particularly trees in the Cola genus. These alternative hosts allow the pest population to persist in the environment even when cocoa trees are temporarily dormant or less susceptible.

The biology of the mirid consists of egg, nymph (five instars), and adult stages. Eggs are embedded by the female into the succulent tissues of young shoots or pods. The entire life cycle takes approximately one month, allowing for several overlapping generations throughout the year, especially in regions with consistent rainfall and high humidity.

The damage is caused by both nymphs and adults feeding on the sap of the plant. As they feed, they inject toxic saliva, which causes necrosis in the plant tissues. This leads to the formation of characteristic necrotic lesions, the dieback of shoots, and the development of distorted, scarred cocoa pods. Severe infestations can result in total branch dieback and significant loss of plantation vigor.

Effective management of this pest requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize chemical reliance and maximize long-term control:

• Regular pruning of infested shoots to reduce the resident pest population.
• Targeted application of insecticides during peak infestation periods, ensuring proper coverage.
• Promotion of natural biological control agents, such as predatory ants (e.g., Oecophylla longinoda).
• Maintenance of shade and proper canopy management to create environments less favorable for the pest.
