Rainbow trout

The rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri, or Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a predatory fish belonging to the family Salmonidae and order Salmoniformes. It is important to define clearly that this species is not a plant pest. It possesses no biological mechanism for consuming or damaging cultivated crops, as its diet consists primarily of aquatic organisms.

In terms of systematic position, rainbow trout are ray-finned fish. While they do not attack plants, their presence in aquaculture systems integrated with agricultural land requires attention. The primary concern for an agronomist is the management of water quality used for both fish farming and subsequent irrigation of fields.

The biology and lifecycle of rainbow trout require specific environmental parameters, including high levels of dissolved oxygen and cool water temperatures. The intensive production of this species generates significant metabolic waste. This organic matter, if discharged into irrigation channels, can lead to nutrient-rich runoff, potentially causing eutrophication in field ditches.

The threat potential is strictly indirect. High levels of nitrogenous waste in aquaculture effluent can alter the nutrient balance of the soil when used for irrigation. This may cause physiological stress to certain sensitive plant species or promote excessive growth of aquatic weeds in irrigation pipes, which effectively disrupts the water supply efficiency.

Protective measures are based on proper water management and infrastructure maintenance to ensure that aquaculture activities do not interfere with crop production. Suggested practices include:
