Rainbow trout

Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, formerly Salmo irideus) belongs to the family Salmonidae, order Salmoniformes. While primarily a commercial aquaculture species, its presence in integrated farming systems, such as aquaponics or integrated rice-fish farming, requires careful management to prevent damage to cultivated crops.

The primary crops affected are aquatic vegetables, herbs grown in hydroponic solutions, and young rice plants (Oryza sativa) in flooded paddies. The interaction between the fish and the vegetation is usually mediated by the fish's search for food within the substrate, which can inadvertently cause structural damage to the plants.

Biologically, the rainbow trout is an active predator with high metabolic requirements. Its life cycle progresses from egg and fry to juvenile and adult stages. In artificial agricultural environments, if supplemental feeding is insufficient, the fish exhibits exploratory behavior, digging into plant substrates to find organisms, which disrupts the root stability of the crop plants.

The damage caused is primarily mechanical. Root systems are often severed or exposed to water currents, preventing nutrient uptake. In rice paddies, the disturbance caused by trout swimming and rooting leads to excessive sediment suspension, which blocks light penetration to young seedlings, causing chlorosis and inhibiting the photosynthetic capacity of the plants.

Effective management strategies for protecting crops from damage include:

• Using physical barriers, such as mesh screens, to segregate the fish zone from the plant root zone.
• Implementing automated feeding schedules to maintain satiety and reduce digging behavior.
• Maintaining optimal stocking density relative to the system size to prevent overgrazing or excessive activity.
• Monitoring water turbidity and root health to intervene before significant crop loss occurs.
