Brown trout

Brown trout (Salmo trutta) belongs to the order Salmoniformes and the family Salmonidae. In the context of large-scale irrigation and agricultural water management, this species can act as a technical nuisance, potentially disrupting the stability of irrigation channels and related hydrological infrastructure necessary for crop production.

The damage caused by this species is primarily mechanical. It affects irrigation canals, water intake points, and drainage systems integrated into agricultural landscapes. By digging spawning beds in the gravel linings of irrigation channels, the fish cause localized erosion and destabilization of the water distribution structures required for field irrigation.

The biology of the brown trout is strictly linked to cold, oxygen-rich running water. During their breeding cycle, trout migrate and construct redds (spawning nests) by moving gravel. In artificial irrigation canals, this biological activity leads to the buildup of sediment and the degradation of canal beds, which interferes with the precise flow of water to thirsty crops.

The level of harm is characterized by the clogging of intake filters, damage to bank reinforcements, and changes in the water flow velocity. These issues can result in uneven irrigation patterns, equipment malfunctions in pumping stations due to suspended solids, and occasional flooding of field edges, which negatively impacts the development of sensitive agricultural cultures.
