Flesh fly

The systematic position of the species Sarcophaga complicata belongs to the order Diptera and the family Sarcophagidae (flesh flies). These are medium to large-sized insects featuring a characteristic gray body color with longitudinal stripes on the thorax and a distinct "checkered" pattern on the abdomen, which serves as a key diagnostic feature.

While members of this family are most commonly associated with decomposing organic matter, Sarcophaga complicata can pose a threat to agricultural crops under specific conditions. The pest typically damages fruits and vegetative plant parts that have pre-existing mechanical injuries or are susceptible to rotting, making it a secondary pest capable of accelerating crop loss.

The biology and life cycle of the fly consist of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females of this species are ovoviviparous or viviparous, depositing larvae directly onto a substrate such as damaged plant tissues or rotting fruits. The larval development rate is highly dependent on ambient temperature and nutrient availability, allowing the species to produce multiple generations within a single growing season.

The nature of damage involves the destruction of plant tissues by larvae that actively feed on cell sap and decaying organic matter. This leads to the rapid rotting of fruits, stems, or root crops, rendering the produce unsuitable for storage or sale. The pest not only physically destroys plant parts but also facilitates the spread of secondary fungal and bacterial infections.

Protection measures include a set of integrated agronomic practices aimed at preventing fly reproduction. It is crucial to remove plant residues in a timely manner, perform deep fall plowing to destroy pupae in the soil, and manage primary pests whose injuries create favorable conditions for Sarcophaga complicata colonization. When necessary, insecticides are applied during the peak adult flight period.
