Flesh fly

Systematic position: The flesh fly (Sarcophaga ruficornis) belongs to the order Diptera, family Sarcophagidae. It is a medium-sized insect characterized by a gray body with three black longitudinal stripes on the thorax and a distinct checkerboard-like pattern on the abdomen, which distinguishes it from other common dipterans.

Crops affected: While primarily known for its role in decomposition, Sarcophaga ruficornis can impact fruit and vegetable crops when they have open wounds, internal decay, or are stored improperly. In an agricultural context, this fly becomes a pest when it infests rotting produce or crops that have already been compromised by other factors.

Biology and life cycle: This species is larviparous, meaning the female deposits live larvae rather than eggs onto a suitable organic substrate. Under favorable warm conditions, the development from larva to adult fly can occur in as little as 10 to 20 days. High humidity and the presence of decomposing plant material significantly accelerate their population growth.

Damage and harm: The primary harm is caused by the larvae feeding on plant tissues, which promotes rapid rot and complete decay of the fruit. Furthermore, because these flies frequently visit decaying organic matter, they act as vectors for various bacteria and fungi, facilitating the spread of secondary plant infections that can devastate stored harvest volumes.

Control measures: Management of this pest relies heavily on sanitation and preventive agricultural practices to eliminate breeding sites:
