Oak aphid

Oak aphid (genus Sarucallis) is a group of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. These aphids are specialized feeders, primarily affecting species within the Quercus genus. They are recognized by their distinct adaptation to the leaf anatomy of oak trees, where they establish large colonies on the abaxial side of leaves.

The host range is primarily limited to various oak species. Under favorable climatic conditions, these aphids can reach high population densities, posing a significant risk to the aesthetic value and physiological health of ornamental oak trees in urban landscapes, nurseries, and public forests.

The biology of Sarucallis involves a complex cycle including both asexual reproduction during the growing season and sexual reproduction to produce overwintering eggs. These eggs are securely deposited in bark crevices, ensuring the survival of the population during harsh winter months and providing a starting point for spring infestation.

Economic and biological damage is caused by the extraction of phloem sap, which triggers leaf chlorosis and premature senescence. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold. This layer blocks sunlight and hinders the leaf's ability to undergo photosynthesis, leading to stunted growth and reduced tree vigor over time.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention. Chemical control with systemic insecticides is often used in high-pressure scenarios, while integrated pest management (IPM) practices focus on promoting natural predators such as lady beetles and lacewings, which provide sustainable biological control against aphid outbreaks.
