Description
The elm leafhopper (Scaphoideus luteolus) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. While it is native to North America, its primary importance in agriculture and forestry lies in its role as the principal vector for elm yellows (phytoplasma), a devastating disease affecting elm trees (Ulmus species).
The insect feeds on the phloem of host trees, inserting its piercing-sucking mouthparts into the leaves and succulent stems. By extracting plant sap, it not only causes direct nutritional stress to the tree but also facilitates the transmission of pathogens into the vascular system, leading to systemic infection and subsequent tree decline.
Its biological cycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. The insect overwinters as eggs embedded in the bark of young elm twigs. With the arrival of warmer weather in spring, nymphs emerge and start feeding immediately. They undergo several molts before reaching the adult stage, typically observed in early to mid-summer, depending on climatic conditions.
Damage symptoms manifest as leaf yellowing, curling, and canopy thinning. As the phytoplasma restricts the transport of nutrients within the tree, affected branches wither, and the tree eventually succumbs to the disease. Because there is currently no cure for elm yellows, controlling the leafhopper vector is the only way to protect elm populations.
