American grapevine leafhopper
Scaphoideus titanus
Description
The American grapevine leafhopper (Scaphoideus titanus) is a hemipteran insect belonging to the Cicadellidae family. Native to North America, this species has become a significant pest in European viticulture. Its primary economic impact is not caused by sap-feeding alone, but by its role as the sole vector of the phytoplasma Flavescence dorée, a devastating disease that affects grapevines.
This insect is highly host-specific, feeding almost exclusively on Vitis species. Both nymphs and adults suck sap from the underside of leaves and young shoots. While their feeding can weaken the plant, the real danger lies in the inoculation of the phytoplasma into healthy vines, leading to rapid spread of the disease within the vineyard and to neighboring plantations.
The life cycle of Scaphoideus titanus is univoltine, meaning it has one generation per year. The pest overwinters as eggs embedded in the bark of two-year-old wood. Nymphs emerge in late spring, around mid-May, and pass through five larval stages. Adults appear in July and remain active through early autumn. They are highly mobile and easily spread the disease during their active flight period.
Damage assessment includes observing direct feeding symptoms and, more importantly, disease symptoms. The Flavescence dorée disease results in significant economic loss, characterized by yellowing or reddening leaves that roll downward, withered inflorescences, and poor wood maturation. Eventually, the affected vines fail to produce viable fruit and often perish within a few years of infection.
Management strategies focus on preventing the spread of the vector and the disease. Essential measures include the use of certified healthy planting material and the systematic removal and destruction of infected vines to eliminate the reservoir of the phytoplasma. Monitoring populations using yellow sticky traps is critical for timing insecticide applications, which should target the early nymphal stages to prevent the spread of the disease before the adults become highly mobile.
