Southern mole cricket
Scapteriscus borellii
Description
The southern mole cricket (Scapteriscus borellii) is a member of the order Orthoptera and the family Gryllotalpidae. Native to South America but invasive in many regions, this insect is highly adapted for burrowing in soil. It is known for its aggressive behavior and high reproductive potential, making it a significant challenge for agricultural productivity.
This pest has a broad host range, feeding on both subterranean plant parts and occasionally on organic surface material. Crops such as turfgrass, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and various legumes are frequently targeted. In agricultural systems, the southern mole cricket can destroy large stands of seedlings by undermining the soil and severing roots during its tunnel construction.
The life cycle involves egg, nymph, and adult stages, with most development occurring beneath the soil surface. Females excavate deep chambers to lay their eggs, which are protected by the soil structure. Nymphs closely resemble the adults but lack functional wings. Throughout their development, they expand their tunnels, continuously searching for food sources, which makes the infestation spread rapidly across fields.
The damage caused by Scapteriscus borellii is primarily mechanical. By tunneling near the surface, they disturb root systems, causing plants to wilt and die due to lack of water and nutrients. Furthermore, the tunnels create air pockets in the root zone, leading to rapid desiccation of the soil, which is particularly detrimental to younger plants and newly established crops.
Effective management requires a combination of strategies. Chemical control, such as the application of bait or surface sprays, remains the most common method. However, integrated pest management (IPM) practices, including the use of entomopathogenic nematodes and fungi, are increasingly recommended to reduce chemical reliance. Early detection through monitoring tunnels and surface activity is crucial for maintaining crop health.
