South American mole cricket

Systematic position. The species belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Gryllotalpidae. Known as the South American mole cricket, Scapteriscus oxydactylus is a highly specialized subterranean insect that poses a significant threat to various agricultural and horticultural crops, primarily within its native range in South America.

Affected crops. This pest has a diverse host range, making it a generalist threat to agriculture. It frequently damages maize, rice, sugarcane, and various vegetable crops such as potatoes and tomatoes. Furthermore, it is a well-documented pest of managed turfgrass and nursery seedlings, where it destroys the root systems during its foraging activities.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Scapteriscus oxydactylus is fundamentally subterranean. Adults and nymphs spend the majority of their lives in soil tunnels. Females are known for constructing intricate brood chambers where they guard their eggs. The developmental stages include several nymphal instars, all of which are capable of causing damage to plant tissues as they grow and expand their subterranean networks.

Damage and economic impact. The primary form of damage involves the severing of roots and underground stems, which effectively cuts off the plant's nutrient and water uptake. This leads to the rapid wilting and eventual death of the affected seedlings. Besides direct feeding, the constant burrowing activity creates air pockets around roots, exacerbating plant stress and often leading to severe economic losses in infested agricultural fields.

Management strategies. Effective control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:

• Deep tillage to disrupt tunnels and expose egg chambers to desiccation.
• Application of granular or bait-based insecticides near the root zone.
• Usage of biological control agents, such as entomopathogenic fungi or nematodes.
• Monitoring population density via light traps or acoustic detection to time interventions.
