Scatopse fuscipes is a small dipteran insect belonging to the Scatopsidae family. Often referred to as minute black scavenger flies, these insects are commonly found in agricultural environments where organic matter accumulates. While adults are generally harmless, the larvae can become significant pests in greenhouse production and seedbeds.

The primary hosts for this pest include a wide variety of vegetable crops. The larvae are typically associated with damp, organic-rich environments, including potting soils, greenhouse substrates, and compost heaps. They are particularly destructive during the early growth stages of seedlings, where they can severely impact plant development and survival rates.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the most critical from an agronomic perspective, as larvae reside within the substrate. Depending on temperature and moisture conditions, they can complete multiple generations in a single season, leading to exponential population growth if left unmonitored in protected cultivation environments.

The damage caused by Scatopse fuscipes is primarily focused on the roots, hypocotyls, and stems of young plants. Larvae consume plant tissues, creating entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, which often cause damping-off diseases. Plants suffering from such attacks typically exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and eventually wilt and collapse.
