The Desert locust (Latin: Schistocerca gregaria) is a species of short-horned grasshopper in the family Acrididae. It is considered one of the most destructive migratory pests in the world, capable of forming dense swarms that can travel vast distances while stripping vegetation in their path.
The pest poses a severe threat to a wide range of agricultural crops, including wheat, maize, millet, cotton, and various types of vegetables and fruit trees. Given their voracious appetite, these insects can completely destroy standing crops, leading to significant economic losses and potential food insecurity for entire regions.
The biology of Schistocerca is marked by phase polyphenism, allowing it to exist in both a solitary and a gregarious form. The life cycle involves eggs laid in sandy soil, nymphal stages, and the adult stage. Mass breeding is typically triggered by abnormal weather patterns, such as heavy rains in arid areas, which provide the necessary conditions for population explosions.
The damage caused by these insects is immediate and catastrophic. Both nymphs and adults consume vast amounts of organic material, attacking every green part of the plant. This intense feeding leads to severe defoliation, damage to stems, and destruction of reproductive structures, rendering the affected crops unmarketable or leading to plant mortality.
