Schistocerca piceifrons is a species of insect belonging to the family Acrididae, widely known as the Central American locust. It is a highly destructive pest, recognized for its phase polymorphism, which allows it to transform from a solitary insect into a gregarious, swarming form that devastates agricultural production across the Americas.
This locust affects a wide variety of crops, including staple grains like maize, sorghum, and rice, as well as industrial crops like sugarcane and pasture grasses. When swarms are present, they are capable of defoliating entire fields within hours, causing significant financial losses to farmers and impacting local food security.
