Description

Systematic position. The pear grain aphid (Schizaphis piricola) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized insect that maintains a complex relationship with its primary host, the pear tree, and various secondary hosts within the grass family.

Host plants and damage. The primary host is the pear (Pyrus spp.). The aphids feed on the undersides of leaves and young, tender shoots. By sucking the sap, the insects weaken the tree, causing leaf curling, chlorosis, and stunted development of the current season's vegetative growth.

Biology and life cycle. This species exhibits a heteroecious life cycle. Eggs overwinter in the crevices of pear bark. In spring, stem mothers hatch and produce offspring. Later in the season, winged forms migrate to secondary hosts, typically grasses, where several generations occur throughout the summer before returning to pear trees to reproduce and lay winter eggs.

Nature of damage. Beyond direct nutritional loss, the aphids secrete honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. This black fungal growth inhibits photosynthesis and degrades the overall health and vigor of the tree. Severe infestations significantly impact fruit quality and decrease the tree's resilience to harsh winter conditions.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential. This includes monitoring for the first appearance of aphids in spring and using systemic insecticides when necessary. Cultural practices, such as removing basal suckers and controlling grass weeds in the orchard, can disrupt the migration cycle and significantly reduce aphid populations.
