Short-bellied grain aphid

Taxonomy. Schizaphis rotundiventris is classified under the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized insect species that thrives on the vegetative parts of various Poaceae plants, making it a recurring issue in cereal production.

Host crops. This aphid primarily targets cereal crops, showing a strong preference for wheat, barley, and oats. It also colonizes numerous wild grasses, which act as reservoirs and primary hosts, especially during the early stages of the growing season or after harvest.

Biology and life cycle. The species exhibits a complex life cycle characterized by rapid parthenogenetic reproduction during the summer. As temperatures drop in the autumn, sexual reproduction occurs, leading to the deposition of overwintering eggs on host plants, although in milder climates, viviparous survival is possible.

Nature of damage and economic impact. Aphids form dense colonies on the underside of leaves and stems, sucking plant sap and causing chlorosis and stunted growth. The most severe economic impact arises from the transmission of plant viruses, which can lead to significant crop failure and reduced grain quality.
