Description
Systematic position. The pine needle aphid (Schizolachnus piniradiatae) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest that has evolved to feed specifically on the needles of various pine species, making it a significant concern for both forest nurseries and ornamental conifer plantations.
Host plants and damage. The pest primarily infests pine trees, including Scots pine and Monterey pine. The aphids settle in rows along the needles, feeding on the plant sap. This feeding activity leads to yellowing, needle distortion, and premature needle drop, which significantly weakens the tree and reduces its overall aesthetic and biological value.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle typically involves asexual reproduction (parthenogenesis) for most of the season. Aphids often form large, dense colonies that are visible to the naked eye. A characteristic feature of this species is its relationship with ants, which protect the aphids from natural predators in exchange for the honeydew the aphids excrete.
Pest significance. The damage is twofold: direct sap loss and secondary infestation. The honeydew produced by the aphids acts as a medium for sooty mold growth, which covers the needles in a black, powdery layer. This layer blocks light, severely inhibiting photosynthesis and leading to growth retardation or even the death of the tree in cases of heavy infestation.
Protection measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling Schizolachnus piniradiatae.
