Schizomyia gall midge

Systematic position: The genus Schizomyia belongs to the family Cecidomyiidae within the order Diptera. These small insects are known as gall midges because their larval stage causes abnormal plant growth, known as galls, which serve as both food and shelter for the developing larvae.

Host plants: Schizomyia species attack a variety of plant hosts, including ornamental shrubs, fruit-bearing trees, and several woody species. The choice of host depends on the specific species of the midge, with many showing a high level of host-specificity, targeting particular tissues such as leaves, flower buds, or young shoots.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The tiny, short-lived adult flies lay their eggs into the host plant tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae trigger a reaction in the plant cells, leading to the formation of a gall. Within this protective structure, the larva feeds, grows, and eventually pupates before emerging as an adult.

Nature of damage and pest impact: Damage is characterized by visible deformations such as swellings, pouches, or galls on the plant surface. These galls interfere with the plant's vascular system, causing stunted growth, premature leaf fall, and loss of reproductive organs (flowers or fruit). In cases of heavy infestation, the overall health and vitality of the host plant are significantly reduced.

Protection measures: Controlling Schizomyia is challenging due to the protective nature of the galls, so integrated pest management is essential:

• Sanitation practices: removing and destroying infested plant material to break the life cycle.
• Monitoring for adult emergence to time the application of contact or systemic insecticides effectively.
• Promoting plant health through proper fertilization and irrigation to help plants recover from damage.
