Scirtes orbiculatus is a species of marsh beetle belonging to the family Scirtidae, order Coleoptera. While not widely classified as a major agricultural pest, this insect thrives in specific habitats such as saturated soils, floodplains, and areas with poor drainage, which can occasionally bring it into conflict with intensive crop production.

The beetle primarily impacts plants situated in high-moisture environments. It is known to infest various herbaceous plants and, in some cases, young vegetable crops that are grown in damp conditions. Its presence is often indicative of poor field drainage or seasonal waterlogging that creates a suitable micro-habitat for the beetle's development.

The biology of this species is highly specialized. The larvae are aquatic or semi-aquatic, developing within moist substrates or standing water where they feed on organic debris and algae. Adults are terrestrial, equipped with powerful jumping hind legs that allow them to move effectively across vegetation. The transition between these stages makes the species highly dependent on local moisture levels.

The pest causes damage primarily by feeding on the foliage of young plants. Adults create irregular holes or skeletonize leaves, which can lead to significant stress for young seedlings. In extreme cases of high population density, growth rates are reduced, and the overall plant vigor is compromised, making the crop more susceptible to secondary infections or environmental stress.
