Description
Sclerodermus is a genus of parasitic wasps belonging to the family Bethylidae (order Hymenoptera). These small, often wingless insects are specialized parasitoids that target the larvae of wood-boring beetles. While they play a role in natural ecosystem regulation, they are frequently viewed as pests when they invade human environments alongside infested timber.
The primary hosts of Sclerodermus are larvae of beetles such as longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae) and metallic wood-boring beetles (Buprestidae). They infest various tree species, both coniferous and deciduous. In a domestic context, the pests are commonly introduced into homes through untreated firewood, raw timber, or antique wooden furniture that contains active wood-boring larvae.
The biology of Sclerodermus is fascinating yet problematic; the females are often apterous (wingless) and resemble ants, allowing them to crawl deep into the galleries made by wood-boring beetles. The female paralyzes the host larva with a venomous sting before laying her eggs on it. The larvae then hatch and feed on the host, completing their development within the wood gallery.
The pest status of Sclerodermus is primarily linked to its impact on human health. When the natural host population within the wood is exhausted, or if the wasps are disturbed, they may bite humans. These bites cause intense itching, red welts, and persistent skin irritation, which is often misdiagnosed as other dermatological conditions or bed bug infestations.
