Sclerodermus domesticus is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Bethylidae. While it is not a direct consumer of wood, it is considered a pest in domestic environments due to its life cycle, which is intrinsically linked to wood-boring beetles that damage furniture and architectural structures.

The biology of this species is based on its role as an ectoparasite. The female wasp locates the larvae of wood-boring beetles, such as Anobiidae, hidden within wooden materials. She utilizes a paralyzing venom on the beetle larvae and subsequently deposits her eggs on them, providing the developing wasp larvae with an immediate and accessible food source.

The development cycle is highly efficient and dependent on the availability of hosts within dry wood. The females exhibit morphological plasticity, with both winged and wingless forms, allowing them to traverse deep into wooden galleries or disperse through living spaces in search of new hosts, effectively colonizing entire homes.

The primary concern regarding Sclerodermus domesticus, besides the damage caused by the host beetles it tracks, is its impact on human health. When these wasps enter living areas, they frequently sting residents. The sting is known to be particularly painful, often causing severe local allergic reactions, persistent skin lesions, and intense itching that can be misdiagnosed as other dermatological conditions.
