Scorpaena is a genus of marine fish within the Scorpaenidae family, belonging to the order Scorpaeniformes. It is important to note from an agronomic perspective that this organism is not a pest of terrestrial plants; it is a marine predator that exists entirely within aquatic ecosystems and does not impact standard agricultural crop production.

The biology of Scorpaena is centered on ambush predation. These fish possess highly developed camouflage capabilities, allowing them to blend seamlessly with rocky sea floors and seaweed. Their life cycle includes a larval stage spent in the water column, followed by a transition to a benthic (bottom-dwelling) lifestyle, where they rely on stealth and sudden movement to capture prey.

In the context of industrial aquaculture or seaweed farming, Scorpaena is considered an unwanted guest. While it does not consume plants directly, its presence in closed-loop water systems (RAS) can disrupt the delicate balance of the farm's biodiversity by preying on beneficial small invertebrates that are essential for nutrient cycling and ecological stability.

The primary concern regarding this fish in a professional setting is human safety rather than crop damage. Scorpaena species possess venomous spines along their dorsal and anal fins. Accidental contact can cause severe pain and local inflammation, posing a significant occupational hazard to personnel working in marine-based agricultural installations or research facilities.

Control measures to prevent Scorpaena from entering aquaculture systems focus on physical exclusion. The installation of fine-mesh screens and mechanical filters on water intake pipes is the most effective method for prevention. If a specimen is detected within a closed system, it should be removed manually by trained personnel wearing protective gloves to avoid injuries from the venomous spines.
